COMPREHENSIVE RISK REDUCTION COUNSELING
Individual risk reduction counseling and case management services for high-risk individuals, regardless of HIV status.  The CRCS counselor works with the client to identify triggers and risk factors.  They then develop a plan to reduce the severity of the risk factors.


COUNSELING, TESTING & REFERRAL
Basic HIV prevention education and HIV testing for individuals whose behaviors place them at risk for contracting HIV.  AIDS Project Hartford counselors use the OraQuik rapid test method.


 OUTREACH & EDUCATION
HIV education presentations conducted by APH health educators for middle schools, high schools, colleges, alternative incarceration programs, substance abuse programs, mental health programs, at-risk youth programs, homeless shelters and community groups.


 POSITIVE ATTITUDES
Peer-led, bi-monthly social/educational group for HIV+ men who have sex with men.  Groups meet in Hartford and New Haven.


 PROJECT PLUS
A structured HIV prevention education curriculum for HIV+inmates who are nearing release from prison.

RESPECT
Brief (2-4 sessions) personalized HIV prevention education and risk reduction counseling for individuals whose behaviors and/or attitudes place them at risk for contracting or transmitting HIV.


 SISTA
HA structured group-level intervention that uses cultural and gender references to instill pride and disseminate HIV prevention, risk reduction, safer sex and negotiation skills information to Women of Color, regardless of their HIV status.


 STREET SMART
A structured group-level intervention that targets homeless, transient and high-risk youth.  This intervention utilizes a very realistic and relevant curriculum and includes HIV testing and individual risk-reduction sessions.

OUTREACH & EDUCATION
This series of services provides HIV/AIDS-related materials and presentations to school, business, community and civic groups. Examples of services include:

  • Information tables at community events
  • Educational and prevention material distribution
  • Educational workshops on risk reduction
  • Special events to increase public awareness
  • Outreach to persons who are deaf and hard of hearing
  • Street outreach and needle exchange

NEEDLE EXCHANGE PROGRAM (NEP)
A program designed to reduce the risk of HIV transmission for injection drug users and their families and friends. The NEP van stops at various Hartford locations and exchanges used needles for clean needles. Additional services the NEP staff offer include:

  • Referrals for drug and health treatment and services
  • HIV/AIDS prevention education and materials


POSITIVE ATTITUDES
These gatherings for gay/bi HIV+ men are pot luck socials that take place twice each month.  The second Sunday of each month is at the New Haven Gay and Lesbian Community Center , 50 Fitch Street and the fourth Sunday of each month is at a private residence or at The Living Center in Hartford, 1841 Broad Street.  Invitations with directions are sent out each month.

24-HOUR HOTLINE (860-247-AIDS) (860-247-2437)
The AIDS Project Hartford Hotline provides:

  • Current information on symptoms, transmission, and prevention of HIV/AIDS and related issues
  • Information on anonymous HIV counseling and testing sites
  • Referrals to other agencies and individuals providing services to persons with HIV/AIDS and to those at risk
  • An informed, caring person ready to listen to the fears and concerns created by this health crisis TTY Hotline (860-951-4791)(9am-5pm weekdays)
